The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
